Top Winterization Priorities for Personal Yachts

Engine and Fuel System Preparation

One of the most vital components of your yacht is its engine. Without proper cold weather care, your engine can degrade over the winter and suffer problems related to freezing, including cracked blocks, etc. To avoid this, it’s essential to change the oil and oil filter to remove any contaminants that may have entered the system and that can cause corrosion if left undetected. Once this is completed, the cooling system will need to be flushed with fresh water to remove salt and debris build-up, and anti-freeze will be added to protect the engine from cooling temperatures. For fuel systems, tanks should be filled to prevent condensation buildup, and a fuel stabilizer should be utilized to keep fuel viable throughout the colder months. 

Plumbing and Water Systems

Plumbing and water systems can be particularly vulnerable to cooler weather, even in Vancouver, where temperatures tend to stay above freezing (remember, ocean temperatures are often much cooler than the ambient environment). To avoid freezing and damage, all fresh water tanks, water heaters, and lines should be drained and use a non-toxic antifreeze (designed specifically for marine systems) to fill the lines and bilge pump. AC systems should also be flushed and treated with antifreeze to prevent any residual water from freezing and damaging the system while it remains docked. 

Protecting the Hull

Your hull acts as the main line of defense and watertight seal against marine environments and is constantly exposed to the elements throughout the winter months. While it is essential to routinely care for your hull and remove marine debris and flora, this becomes even more important during down seasons, when the boat is less likely to be regularly inspected (unless you utilize a trusted service like Yacht Care Systems, of course).

To prepare for winter, the hull needs to be thoroughly cleaned to remove any salt, grime or marine growth and then thoroughly inspected for any signs of damage or wear. Hulls are prone to cracks, blistering and other issues that can result from corrosion and minor collisions with debris or docks; any issues should be repaired as quickly as possible to avoid progressive damage. To prevent costly repairs, don’t fall into the trap of waiting “until next season” to care for existing damage; aquatic environments can be particularly aggressive for corrosion, especially when a vessel is left sitting for months at a time. Prevention is key to avoiding larger scale issues, and even minor cracks, etc, should be taken seriously. 

Once inspection and repairs are complete, a high-quality wax should be applied to the hull to offer an additional layer of protection against moisture and UV damage. De-icing systems can be vital to preventing ice from forming around the hull. 

Battery and Electrical Systems

Properly winterizing the battery and electrical systems is crucial to avoid damage and ensure your yacht is ready to go in the spring. Batteries should be fully charged and disconnected to prevent drainage, then stored in a cool, dry place. They should also be checked periodically over the winter to maintain their charge.

Electrical components and connections should be thoroughly inspected before winterizing for any signs of corrosion and wear, and as with the hull, it’s crucial to deal with any identified issues promptly to keep your boat as safe (and operational) as possible. 

 Start by fully charging the batteries and then disconnect them to prevent any drain. Store them in a cool, dry place, and periodically check their charge over the winter. Weather-sensitive electronics should be removed and stored in a climate-controlled environment and re-tested for efficiency upon reinstalling in the spring. 

Interior and Exterior Care

Finally, winterizing the interior and exterior of your yacht helps keep it as comfortable and pristine as possible all winter long and ensures you have an enjoyable environment to return to the next boating season. The interior should be thoroughly cleaned and dried to prevent the growth of mold and mildew, perishable items should be removed, and all lockers and compartments should be cleaned and well-ventilated to prevent mold growth as well. Decks, railings, and interior components will often be treated with protective sealants and polished to return them to their original state. 

The exterior will also need to be cleaned, and all surfaces, including upholstery, trimmings, canvas covers and more, and protective sealants should be applied to all metal surfaces to protect against corrosion.
